Sober living in Chicago;
a path to independence

Drug and alcohol addiction results in significant loss of livelihood and oftentimes drastically changes our lifestyles for the worst. Sober living homes in Chicago are a great environment for those in early recovery to rebuild their lives. In the earliest stages of recovery patients typically go to a detox or inpatient program which tailors to immediate needs like going through withdrawals. During the program at an inpatient facility patients undergo therapy

counselors, psychiatrists, and case managers to better understand the underlying issues that propelled the patient to use in the first place. Upon graduation from the inpatient program patients are referred to an outpatient facility. These provide similar care but grant the residents more freedoms so they can create a blueprint for how to move forward. These are life changing programs that help thousands of people every year to understand more about themselves. Self awareness is the first step to a successful recovery.

Residents come to our sober living home after completing an outpatient program. Sometimes they live in our sober living home while attending an IOP (Intensive outpatient program). Regardless of where they came from, the goal is always the same. Our mission is to provide a safe environment where residents are held accountable for their actions and supported to develop themselves into rebuilding their lives.

Our sober living program has in house recovery meetings several times a week, a house meeting on Sunday, and a weekly house dinner for residents to enjoy a meal together. Sober living programs maintain a strict no tolerance policy where random drug and alcohol testing is administered throughout the week. There is structure, but the focus is to achieve independence. Sober living homes promote residents to focus on the necessities of rebuilding their lives. A good program will educate residents on credit building, producing a higher income, and how to set themselves up to get their own apartment. Since the resident has already completed an inpatient and likely an outpatient program, they should have the foundation of a sober life under their belt. In the rebuilding process it's important to show them what steps need to be

taken and hold them accountable for taking action. Building culture in the house comes with an active management team. Being involved in their lives is what creates those life changing experiences. It’s important to sit down with residents, encourage them to take action, and explain the steps with them. The easiest way to grow is to learn from someone who’s in the position you desire to be in, and have them coach you throughout your journey. Implementing that in the sober living home is an excellent way to jump start residents' success.

There are several ways that sober living homes help residents achieve independence, the most effective is one on one and group training sessions. These sessions are focused on job hunting and interview tips, credit building, apartment approval process, and the loan process for acquiring a new vehicle. The Hendrickson House of Sobriety has all of these and more, allowing residents to thrive in an environment that helps them grow.
